In September 2007, CCCSWA started a new food scrap collection program serving Lafayette, Moraga, and Orinda. The goal of this program is to create a convenient and effective method for residents to recover valuable food scraps that will then be composted into a high quality soil amendment. In 2005, the Lamorinda communities sent more than 8,000 tons of food scraps to local landfills. This new program is designed to significantly reduce this wasteful practice and put our food scraps to a better use through composting.
Starting October 2010, the program will be expanding to Walnut Creek residents!
How the Program Works
For Walnut Creek residents, a kitchen container will be delivered to you and as soon as you receive it in October/November, you can beginning recycling your food scraps. All a resident has to do is place food scraps, or soiled paper, with yard waste in the green cart. To help make collection convenient and sanitary, CCCSWA is providing a small, 2-gallon food recycling container that can be kept underneath the kitchen sink or in a cabinet. The container has a tight sealing lid and carry handle. Small enough to fit under most sinks and on most kitchen counter, it can be washed in the dishwasher. This easy-to-carry container is made with 40% recycled material too!
